How does an AI focus app work?
- You set a goal. Usually one line: the task you’re doing now.
- It watches a signal. Depending on the app, that’s screenshots of your screen, the address and title of the page, or just the app name and window title.
- A model judges it. An AI model decides whether what you’re doing fits the goal. Some apps run it in the cloud, some need your own API key, and at least one can use a model on your Mac.
- It responds. With a nudge, a question, a score or a block, depending on the app.
The difference from a blocker is step 3. A blocklist can’t tell a SwiftUI tutorial on YouTube from a keyboard‑build video on YouTube. A model that knows your task can.
What should you check before installing one?
1. What does it read?
This varies more than anything else. Some apps take screenshots and send them to an AI provider, some read page addresses and titles, and some read only the app name and window title. Less is safer, and less is usually enough.
2. Where does the AI run, and do you need a key?
Built‑in AI works straight away. “Bring your own key” apps cost less, but you need an account with an AI provider, and what the app sends goes to that provider under your key.
3. What happens when it isn’t sure?
A good one stays quiet. An app that speaks up on every grey area gets switched off, just like a blocker.
4. Does it ask, or block?
Some apps lock you out when you drift; others ask. Pick the one that matches why you’re looking: to be stopped, or to be reminded.
5. How do you pay?
Most charge by the week, month or year. A few are free with your own key, and at least one is paid once.
Which AI focus apps are there for Mac?
As of September 2026 they include Meoz, Fomi, Focen, iPromise, Attention and FocusNod, and they differ most on the five points above. See them side by side, with prices and what each one reads, checked on each app’s own site.
Where does FocusNod fit?
FocusNod reads only the app name and window title, has the AI built in, asks rather than blocks, stays quiet when it isn’t sure, and costs $29 once. It launches in October 2026.
